Family Practitioner Questions Implantation Bleeding

ā€œWhen does implantation bleeding occur in an expecting mother?ā€

My sister is 40 days pregnant. However, just yesterday she had some spotting and bleeding. The doctor said it is not a cause of concern and said it looked more like implantation bleeding. When does implantation bleeding occur?

Implantation bleeding usually occurs at the latest about day 22-23 from day 1 (first day of bleeding) of the expected cycle. It depends where she is in that expected cycle. If it is it should only last a day or two. If longer, Iā€™d go in and f/u with your OB/GYN to make sure all is good.

If she's 40 days pregnant, she's past the point that we see implantation bleeding (this occurs 2-3 weeks following the first day of a women's last menstrual cycle). Bleeding at approximately 5-6 weeks can be due to a subchorionic hemorrhage or even simply irritation to the now very vascular cervix.
