Emergency Physician Questions Stroke

When should you go to the ER for stroke symptoms?

I'm 40, and I have headaches and some numbness on one side of my face that comes and goes. I think that this could be a stroke. Should I go to the emergency room?

Within an hour to be eligible for treatment.
Depends on a number of other factors: are you a diabetic, do you suffer from high blood pressure, do you smoke, family history, do you suffer from migraines, etc. You should have those symptoms investigated further, either by your primary care physician, or at your local emergency department.
If you think that you have a focal neurological deficit go to the er. This includes weakness, numbness, difficult speech etc.
