With years of experience and individualized concern for his patients, his distinguished service in the field of eye disorder treatment has made him one of the most renowned eye care specialists in the country. He understands the value of technological advances and how they can be used to provide the best care for patients with eye problems. 

He is renowned for his knowledge of diabetic retinopathy, the subject of an article published in the Western Journal of Medicine in 1982. His focus on eye problems associated with specific diseases has made him one of the top ophthalmologists in the country.

Academically, Dr. Vaughn Sr. graduated PHI BETA KAPPA with a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College in 1969. He  received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine where he also received the Franklin C. McLean Scholar award as the nation’s most outstanding Black medical student in1973. He then went on to complete residencies at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit. He followed up with Retina fellowships at the Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University and the Eye Research Institute in Boston.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) since 1978. After scoring in the 97th percentile nationally on the written examination, Dr. Vaughn was appointed as an Associate Oral Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1983.  The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery. 

As a testament to his successful career, Dr. Vaughn Sr. was awarded the title of Chief Omeluoru by King Mbaukwu for multiple medical missions in Nigeria. His distinguished work in Anambra, Nigeria earned him the ASA-USA Medical Missions Award in 2008. 

Having brought his knowledge and dedication to his work to treating thousands of patients with eye disorders both in the United States and overseas, he has published a number of articles in professional ophthalmic journals.
