Dr. Frank A. Stanton M.D.'s Expert Contributions
  • Will quitting drinking reduce anxiety?

It depends on the causes of your anxiety. If you are using drinking to treat your anxiety you need to find the factors behind your anxiety. If you address those, you will not need to use drinking to treat them. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to feel better after a panic attack?

The more you understand the origin of your panic attacks, the less effect they will have on you and the shorter they will become. READ MORE

  • Is it normal to feel exhausted after an anxiety attack?

Yes it is. Your whole body has been stressed in an anxiety attack READ MORE

  • Double Dose of My Anxiety Meds?

You will be okay, but I would strongly advise against taking Paxil for anxiety. It actually has a serious side effect of causing anxiety. READ MORE

  • My mother doesn't want to live after my father passed?

One way to help her is to ask what her husband would have wanted her to do. My suspicion is that he would want her to go on and have a fulfilling life and to remind her of what she means to other people in her life and her family. READ MORE

  • Are bipolar people manipulative?

The brief answer is no, if you are just looking at the criteria for diagnosing bipolar disorder. However, a person could have that diagnosis and at the same time have the characteristic of being manipulative. People who are experiencing a true manic attack will do anything they can to control people around them. They can certainly be manipulative, though it often looks more like coercion. READ MORE

  • What is end stage bipolar disorder?

I have never heard this term before. It seems to imply that there is a point of no return and no recovery for some people who have been diagnosed with this condition. I personally believe that with the right clinician, all people can be helped. READ MORE

  • Is this combo safe?

You are being treated as if you have a brain disease. What you are describing, however, does not sound like a brain disease. My suspicion is that you are reacting to some difficult life challenges. I would suggest that you look at a larger view of our mental health system as described in a book called The Anatomy of an Epidemic by Robert Whitaker. He also has a very useful website called Mad in America. The answer to your question about safety is that it depends on what you are experiencing. A more important question, in my opinion, is whether all these medications are helping you. In my 50 years of experience, I have not found such a combination helpful. Finding an experienced therapist would be far more helpful. READ MORE

  • Personality disorders?

Actually, the answer to your question would be best obtained by seeing a really experienced therapist who would be more interested in your life than your diagnoses. READ MORE

  • Why is my daughter doing this?

My approach to such difficulties is to increase your proximity to her when she starts this and calmly remove her hand from her nipples. It would be useful, however, to know exactly when she does this. Asking her to stop will usually not work. However, I believe you can disrupt this by proximity to her and helping her to focus on what she could actually be doing at that time - which could be an every day task or an activity that she can do with you. READ MORE

  • Is depression a side effect of a stroke?

It can be. The best treatment for this kind of depression is having predictable contact with a person they are close to. READ MORE

  • How can I get over my brain telling me that I am going to die in my sleep?

You might want to find a good therapist who works with teenagers so that you can find ways to manage your anxiety. You need someone to help you. READ MORE

  • Can stress and anxiety cause physical pain?

The brief answer to your question is yes. READ MORE

  • Sleep talking?

My main recommendation would be that you find a competent therapist who has had lots of experience - a professional who could make a thorough evaluation of your difficulty. READ MORE

  • Serotonin Syndrome?

There is no simple answer to your question. Serotonin syndrome is life-threatening so your treatment would depend on your immediate condition. A thorough evaluation would be the first step. READ MORE

  • Need help with panic episodes?

Unfortunately, it sounds like the professionals you have consulted are of the belief that you have a brain disease. You need a therapist who has enough experience to help you understand the real factors in your life that are leading you to have such severe anxiety. In my experience trying to cover it up with medications will not work. You might look at the website Mad in America to find resources that would be more helpful. The book by that name by Robert Whitaker could also give you a better understanding of the issues you are facing. READ MORE

  • Can you be cured of anxiety?

The short answer is yes. You need to find a therapist who has experience in helping people like you. For more resources, you might look at the website Mad in America READ MORE

  • Low T therapy made me worse, alt safer methods?

You might want to explore a product called Vitalflow, which is an herbal remedy specifically designed to help with the type of problem you are describing. READ MORE

  • Can bipolar people tell they are bipolar?

Unfortunately, the term bipolar has been used to describe a wide variety of conditions. Women who have been angry at their husbands have been described as bipolar. There are also people who have had real manic episodes who are now called bipolar. A more important question has to do with the quality of your life and your relationships. Thinking you are bipolar or not will not help you. READ MORE

  • How do you calm a bipolar person?

The answer to your question is not restricted to those people who have been given a diagnosis of bipolar. You provide calm listening along with a soft voice. A book like Mindsight will explain in more detail the ways you can most effectively and helpfully engage others who may be upset and disregulated. READ MORE
