Dr. Frank A. Stanton M.D.'s Expert Contributions
  • What is the most sedating antidepressant?

This is a question that can be answered by an inquiry to google: The *sedating antidepressants most* commonly used to help with sleep include Trazodone (Desyrel), Amitriptyline (Elavil), and Doxepin (Sinequan). It should be noted that when these medications are used for sleeping and pain relieving properties, it is in much lower doses than when used in the treatment of depression. That said, it is wise to remember that everyone has a unique reaction to medication so that generalizations such as these need to be taken with a grain of salt. READ MORE

  • What causes bipolar depression?

The standard answer to this question is that there is no external cause, that it is a genetic, neurobiological disorder that requires life time treatment with medication. In my experience, there is no proof of these assertions and I find that so called bipolar depression has its roots in life circumstances. For people who suffer manic attacks, it is different. These manic episodes usually result in destructive events in the person's life, and depression can be the reaction to these events. READ MORE

  • Can depression be prevented in seniors?

The brief answer to your question is yes. The most important thing is for seniors to have a dependable support group - family or friends and have good health care. READ MORE

  • How long can psychosis last?

This depends a lot on the treatment. Currently, I am finding that the best results are obtained in Finland using the Open Dialogue approach. Everyone is different, but psychotic episodes treated in this way may be alleviated within weeks. READ MORE

  • Social anxiety?

The type of anxiety you describe can be helped with a good therapist. READ MORE

  • Can you work in aerospace medicine if you suffer from social anxiety?

Social anxiety can be treated quite successfully, and I should see no reason that it should interfere with a job in the aerospace industry. READ MORE

  • How long does postpartum depression last?

This all depends on the effective treatment being given. In my experience, the best treatment is psychological, i.e., a good therapist. READ MORE

  • Is depression caused by a chemical imbalance?

The brief answer is no. There is no evidence for that idea, however, much it has been asserted. READ MORE

  • How do you manage from prolonged stress?

A good therapist can help with this. Also, I would suggest learning about mindfulness which if you Google it would give you many good options. READ MORE

  • Can stress from work affect my relationships?

The brief answer is yes! READ MORE

  • Stress and anxiety?

Since I am not an expert in psychopharmacology, I can't recommend any medication for you. You would need to find a psychiatrist who prescribes or a nurse practitioner. My recommendations are to study mindfulness (Jon Kabat-Zinn) and identify the people in your life that are most supportive and calm and keep contact with them. If you find a therapist that you can relate to, that can be transformative. READ MORE

  • How do you self treat anxiety?

I would study mindfulness. The writings of Jon Kabat-Zinn or Thich Naht Hanh are excellent resources and you can also watch YouTube videos about them. READ MORE

  • Screening for Depression & Anxiety?

You can screen yourself quite easily - just put depression screening into a Google search and you will get lots of tests you can take. More importantly, you might want to find a good therapist who could help you deal with any issues that may be influencing your life in a negative way. Finding someone who feels comfortable who gives you the sense that they understand you is the key ingredient. READ MORE

  • Is anxiety considered a mental illness?

The brief answer is no, I don’t consider anxiety a mental illness. In my experience, anxiety is a response to stressful life circumstances. READ MORE

  • My mother is very fearful of death and she needs help?

I would recommend a book by Thich Nhat Hanh called "No death, no fear." READ MORE

  • Does your brain age faster when depressed?

The short answer is that I have never seen any studies that would justify such a view. READ MORE

  • Supplement “DIM”?

I am not aware of any negative interactions, but it's important to keep in mind that each person's physiology can differ and can react differently to the interaction of medications and supplements. READ MORE

  • Need a way to manage my anxiety but my history is making it hard on the doctors?

From what you have shared, it sounds like your difficulties have only been addressed with medication. In my experience, that is at best a partial answer to the kinds of problems that have had the greatest influence on your life. If I were you, I would try to find an experienced therapist who could help you gain greater influence over the issues confronting your life. Again, in my experience, such issues are not "brain diseases" they are challenges in living that include relationships, meaningful work, safety. READ MORE

  • How long does manic depression last?

It is a bit difficult to answer that question. First of all, it would be important to know what was meant by manic depression. The term would indicate that you have alternating manic and depressive states. If you have real manic episodes, they can require a high level of engagement from a therapist and most people end up on medication for such events. With proper management, such episodes can be anticipated and successfully treated before they have destructive influence on a person's life. Some people are given such a diagnosis without having real manic episodes and in that case it is a matter of treating the depression. With true manic depression, you can be vulnerable to attacks for many years. But with proper treatment, that vulnerability can be managed. READ MORE

  • Question regarding a 1013 that I think is on my record?

I think it's considered involuntary only if you sign a paper which clearly says you are leaving against medical advice. READ MORE
