1 What is a Holmium Laser Prostate Surgery?

A treatment for an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia is called Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) and in this procedure, your doctor will use a laser to remove the obstructive portion of the prostate but without doing any incisions.

Morcellator will be used to cut the prostate tissue to become easily removable fragments and then the surgeons will remove the entire portion of the prostate gland which can block the urine flow with the HoLEP and to improve the urinary symptoms and provide a lasting result that there is nothing to grow back after this procedure.

This procedure is less invasive and effective compared to the other traditional methods of removing prostate obstructions and this can also preserve the tissues that are removed for microscopic examination.

After the procedure, the tissue will be examined for other possible conditions and for prostate cancer. Researchers are still studying the long-term results of this procedure.

2 Reasons for Procedure

Here are the most common reasons to undergo a holmium laser prostate surgery.

You need this treatment if you have been diagnosed with urinary outflow obstruction meaning you have trouble passing urine because of an enlarged prostate and if you are on a medication to thin blood such as warfarin or aspirin.

3 Potential Risks

Some of the potential risk holmium laser prostate surgery include:

  • Mild burning
  • Bleeding and Increased frequency of urination
  • No semen produced during orgasm
  • Poor erections
  • Infection of the bladder, testes or kidney
  • Injury to urethra
  • Incontinence

4 Preparing for your Procedure

In preparing for your holmium laser prostate surgery, you must follow your doctor’s orders.

Tell your doctor if you are using blood thinning agents because he may ask you stop it before the procedure as these drugs can cause increased bleeding after the surgery.

You can resume the use of these medications in about 10 days after surgery.

5 What to Expect

Here you can find out what to expect from your holmium laser prostate surgery.

Your doctor will give you anesthesia before the procedure to minimize the pain. After checking for allergies, he may also give you antibiotics.

Once you are numbed or asleep he will then use a laser to separate the obstructing prostate tissue from its surrounding capsule and will push it into the bladder.

An instrument is then used through a telescope device to remove the prostate tissue from the bladder. A catheter is normally left to drain the bladder at the end of the procedure.

6 Procedure Results

Understanding the results of your holmium laser prostate surgery will be made possible by your doctor.

After the procedure, there will be some minor bleeding in the prostate area. Your doctor will suggest that your drinks much fluids as possible to help clear the urine of any blood. You can eat and drink normally after the surgery.

In most cases, patients will feel tired after the procedure. You may even notice that you may pass small flecks of tissue in the urine as the prostate area heals.
