OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions Birth Control Pills

Does birth control make you gain weight?

I'm thinking about going on the pill but I'm worried about if I would gain any extra weight. I've had a few friends gain some weight after starting birth control. Is weight gain a common side effect of birth control pills?

Most of the pills do not cause weight gain. Check properly what you eat and do regular exercises.
Multiple studies have confirmed over the years that oral contraception does not cause weight gain but pregnancy does for sure!

It depends upon the type of birth control. If you use birth control pills you should have less than 5 lb of weight gain. Depo-Provera, the injection, can lead to a significant amount of weight gain. It just depends upon the person.

No. The only form of birth control reported to cause weight gain is depo provera.
No, birth control pills by themselves do not cause weight gain. They do cause increased appetite sometimes. Most common reason for weight gain is eating more calories than required. If you don’t watch what you eat and do not exercise, then you will gain weight.

It is possible to gain a few pounds of weight while on pills. You must eat proper food and exercise regularly; a lot of patients don’t gain weight.
