Pulmonologist Questions Asthma

Are there any natural medicines to treat asthma?

What natural lifestyle changes would you recommend to fight asthma, in addition to my regular medications? Are there any breathing exercises or something I can do to strengthen my breathing?

1 Answer

There are many lifestyle practices that can benefit general health, including respiratory health. Ultraprocessed foods and red meat are not good for the immune system. Focusing the diet on whole, plant based foods provides a diet rich in nutrients to fight disease. This kind of diet also helps to avoid obesity, which complicates all disease, especially asthma. Getting adequate sleep 7-9 hours, regular exercise, avoiding stress, maintaining good social connections also help the immune system fight disease. Air pollution, including dust and other indoor pollution damage the lungs and aggravate asthma. Meditation and Tai Chi are good practices to focus on healthy breathing. Sometimes cardiovascular exercise causes exercise induced asthma. Exercise induced asthma can usually be prevented by using an inhaler.
