  • How long does a toothache last without treatment?

A toothache will last as long as the tooth is alive. The pain will fade after the nerve dies, however the problem will then get worse. Bacteria from the dead tissue will eventually cause and infection and you will begin to lose bone. It is imperative that you see your dentist as soon as possible before it gets worse. READ MORE

  • Does everyone with braces get rubber bands?

Every case is different depending on the severity of the case. Rubber bands are used to rotate teeth and "power chains" are used to bring the teeth together. You may not need to use rubber bands if your case is minor. READ MORE

  • Do they wire your mouth shut after TMJ surgery?

Hello, that would depend on the severity of the surgery and the preference of your oral surgeon. Make sure you ask what his preferences are. READ MORE

  • How painful is a single dental implant?

Like many things in life, it depends on your current level of pain and the condition of your existing tooth that is going to be replaced. The worst part of the implant is the tooth removal and subsequent bone graft. The tooth is removed usually due to non-restorable situation and usually involves an infection. The severity of that infection is what determines how painful the healing process will be. The implant is placed after healing in our office to make the chance of success as high as possible, usually four months after the extraction and bone graft. The implant placement is usually fairly pain free at that point. Most of our patients cannot believe how easy the procedure is. The reason for this is that we place them while there is no sign of infection in brand new bone. The success rate for this procedure goes up significantly by doing it this way. It takes longer to get a finished product but it is worth it to make sure it takes. READ MORE

  • What happens after tooth extraction and bone graft?

Great care to the extraction and bone graft site must be taken to ensure success. The bone graft is very fragile after treatment. Eating soft foods is essential for the first couple of weeks. The mouth must be kept very clean while simultaneously avoiding the extraction/bone graft site. Cleansing the area with a prescription mouthwash and special brush may be needed. The goal is to grow as much bone as possible to support an implant, so excellent home care is key. Contact your dentist for specific instructions pertaining to your bone graft. READ MORE

  • What home remedy is good for a tooth infection?

The answer is none. Tooth infection is a dead tooth and it needs to be treated with Root Canal Therapy or extraction. You can take ibuprofen for the pain and salt water rinses can help sooth the infected area. However, no home therapy can fix the problem. See your dentist as soon as possible before you start to lose bone. READ MORE

  • What happens if I don't get a bone graft after tooth extraction?

Bone grafts preserve bone height after extraction which is extremely important, especially if you are planning on restoring the area with an implant. The area will heal without a bone graft but there will be concave defect area that may disqualify you from getting an implant. Not a big deal if you decide to have a traditional bridge to restore the missing tooth. My suggestion is to get the bone graft if you are not sure how you are going to restore the missing area. It will save you a lot of expense if you do it at the time of the extraction versus afterwards. READ MORE

  • What does enamel erosion look like?

Enamel erosion starts out as yellow staining and chips in the teeth. They can then turn into rough edges, large shiny spots on your teeth, tooth decay, gradual wearing of enamel, and then to clear, slightly translucent teeth that can eventually fracture. The most likely causes are heavy sugary and acidic food/drinks. These teeth can be treated with resin fillings or full coverage crowns for more extreme cases. READ MORE

  • Can you fill a tooth with nerve exposed?

No, you cannot fill a tooth with an exposed nerve without getting root canal treatment first. You can fill it with a temporary filling pending treatment for the root canal but that is for a very short time (hours or a couple of days). Go see your dentist or endodontist as soon as possible. READ MORE

  • How long after a bone graft can I eat?

You can eat right away, however, your diet should be restricted to soft or liquid diet for the first few days. Nothing hard or chewy should be consumed to avoid the possibility of disturbing the bone graft area. You should also refrain from swishing and brushing the area for the time recommended by your dentist. Also, no alcohol or alcohol based mouth rinses. The first few weeks are critical to the success of the bone graft so take extra care if you want a good result. READ MORE

  • Will deep cleaning stop gum disease?

No, a deep cleaning alone will not stop gum disease. Periodontal disease is a progressive disease that can be slowed to a point that it is effectively stopped. However, a "deep cleaning" is only the beginning of the treatment. The patient must develop excellent home care habits and come back for periodontal maintenance appointment three to four times a year to keep the disease at bay. So, if you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, it is imperative that you start the treatment as soon as possible. READ MORE

  • Are these symptoms the impact of the accident or another cause?

The toothache may be part of the cause of the migraines, but it may be coincidental. It is possible for a tooth to die long after trauma. That taste in the mouth may be coming from an infection from the toothache. You should see your dentist and have it evaluated and treated to rule out that portion of your symptoms. You can at least rule out tooth issues if your symptoms persist after treatment. READ MORE

  • White bump inside lip?

You will have to get it examined at a dental office to know for sure. The possibilities could range from trauma (lip bite), a cyst, clogged saliva gland, or something more ominous like cancer. You will not know for sure until you get it looked at. READ MORE

  • How long should your gum be sore after a tooth extraction?

The gum should be sore for up to a week after tooth extraction, sometimes longer depending on your health. The pain will be gone but it can take about a month for the gum to completely heal and up to a year for the bone to heal. READ MORE

  • Can a tooth fall out after a root canal?

The answer is maybe. The answer depends on the condition of the surrounding bone on the treated tooth. Good bone around a root canal generally means that the tooth will have a good prognosis. Bone loss around a root canal treated tooth means a good chance of it being lost. Make sure you have a good foundation before having the root canal being completed. READ MORE

  • Can capped teeth be whitened?

Capped teeth cannot be whitened. They are made from metal or porcelain or a combination of both. Whitening works by going into the pores of the natural teeth. You will have to get new "caps" if you want them whiter. READ MORE

  • How to prevent my bracket from popping off while I sleep?

Brackets are held in place by very strong cement. They should not easily come off under normal circumstances. You may be grinding your teeth, the cement may be weak or contaminated. This situation is very common and most orthodontist incorporate re-cementation of brackets into the Treatment. They may charge you if it becomes excessive. That will be determined by the orthodontist. There isn't anything you can really do to prevent it because it depends solely on the strength and integrity of the cement attaching them. READ MORE

  • Why do my gums hurt after dental cleanings?

Gums will hurt after dental cleanings if there is a moderate amount of hard plaque build-up (calculus) that has to be removed. The plaque irritates the gums and causes them to be red, sensitive, and then start to swell. Removing the plaque takes away the irritant, however, the gums still need to recover so they start to bleed. This brings white blood cells to the area to help heal the area. So, it may seem that the cleaning made your gums bleed. But in actuality, it was the offending plaque that was the culprit. The blood is the first phase of your gums starting to heal. The bleeding and pain should go away within a day or two as long as you continue to brush and floss your teeth. READ MORE

  • Should you brush your teeth before or after coffee?

After coffee is the best time to brush. The coffee is more likely to stain your teeth the longer it has contact with them. So, if you are only brushing once, brush after you have had your coffee. READ MORE

  • Does salt kill bacteria in your mouth?

Salt water rinses do not kill the bacteria outright. They increase the PH balance in the mouth making it an environment that bacteria cannot thrive in and inhibits the growth of the bacteria. Salt water rinses are very helpful to healing and overall oral health but they do not replace brushing and flossing as the primary weapons against tooth decay. READ MORE
