  • What are the side effects of titanium implants?

There are no know side effects of titanium implants. Titanium is a metal that work well all over the body. The only side effects that one could have is if you happen to have an allergic reaction to it. Otherwise, they are perfectly safe. READ MORE

  • Can titanium implants cause autoimmune disease?

The exact cause of autoimmune disease is unknown. There are many theories as to how they are caused but none of them are proven. All I can tell you is that titanium works great in the body in general and that they most likely do not cause autoimmune disease. READ MORE

  • Are ceramic implants better than titanium?

The jury is still out on the if ceramic implants are better or worse than titanium. What I can tell you is that titanium has been proven for over 30 years to be very safe and strong in the mouth. I would go with the proven method over the newer technology until it is proven. READ MORE

  • Why do I see some blood when I floss?

Blood while flossing is usually an indicator of gingivitis. Blood usually shows up when you floss 2 or 3 times a week due to the infrequency of the flossing. Bacteria can accumulate in the mouth and start to cause gingivitis after about 24 hours so it is critical to floss on a daily basis to break it up. When you floss on a daily basis and there is blood, you are probably flossing too hard. Your best bet is to go to your dentist and get a cleaning and check up to make sure you are doing your daily cleaning properly. READ MORE

  • Is a gum graft permanent?

The graft is a permanent procedure. However that does not mean you cannot lose it again from poor hygiene and recurrent periodontal disease. The bottom line is that you have to maintain it. READ MORE

  • Can you get Invisalign with an implant?

Yes, you can get Invisalign with an implant. However, the implant will not move. The treatment will have to take that into consideration when it is being planned and it may effect the overall look of the orthodontics. I highly recommend that patients do traditional braces when it involves implant teeth to get the best result. READ MORE

  • Which brand of mouthwash kills the most bacteria?

The mouthwash that kills the most bacteria is Listerine. However, it kills the good and bad bacteria in the mouth so you should use it sparingly and mouthwash is not a replacement for flossing. We suggest using mouthwash with Fluoride in it like ACT. Remember, mouthwash should be used as a supplement not a substitute for brushing and flossing. READ MORE

  • Is it OK to brush gums?

It is not only okay, it is essential. Plaque and build-up can accumulate on the gums just like the teeth. You do have to be careful when you brush them, use a soft toothbrush, and gentle brushing techniques. READ MORE

  • How do you reduce swelling from an infected tooth?

Swelling can be relieved temporarily with an ice pack to the area, 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off until you can get in to get the tooth treated. Ibuprofen can help with the inflammation. You best bet is to go to your dentist and have the area evaluated. They may give you an antibiotic to stop the infection. They may need to irrigate and drain the area if the swelling is really bad. Don't take any chances. See your dentist as soon as possible. READ MORE

  • Can braces cause TMJ?

Actually it is the exact opposite. Braces will put your teeth in the most ideal position if done correctly. This should make your bite ideal and may actually prevent TMJ from occurring or it may make it go away if you already have it. There is no guarantee of course but the chances of getting TMJ are dramatically better if your teeth and bite are in the ideal position. READ MORE

  • Can your overbite come back after braces?

The answer is yes, if you do not wear your retainer for the rest of your life. Your teeth are very mobile after orthodontic treatment. They will tighten up eventually, however, they will move again over time if they are not kept in check with the retainers. READ MORE

  • What is better for TMJ ice or heat?

The preferred treatment for active TMJ inflammation pain is ice. We usually suggest 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off until the area feels better.. You can use heat during the non-inflammatory times as a therapeutic. READ MORE

  • Can you get teeth cleaned while wearing braces?

Yes they can and it is recommended that you do so due to the added difficulty in keeping them clean while wearing braces. READ MORE

  • What happens if you smoke after jaw surgery?

Smoking constricts the blood flow and inhibits it from reaching the surgical site slowing the healing. Less blood flow means less available nutrients to help with the healing process. This can cause the surgery to fail. It is highly recommended that you reduce and better yet, stop smoking all together after oral surgery procedures if you want them to succeed. READ MORE

  • How can I make my yellow teeth whiter?

Teeth are similar to bone and they only come in the color that you were born with. The only way to naturally whiten them is to clean them professionally. The only thing you can do after that is to have them bleached or crowned to get them whiter. READ MORE

  • Is it ok to brush teeth with baking soda with braces?

Baking soda is an abrasive so you have to be careful when you are using it. It is perfectly safe to use it and it should not hurt your braces. Just like many things in life, everything is good as long as you do it with moderation. READ MORE

  • How long will my face be swollen after bone graft?

Swelling after a bone graft should be minimal if it is done correctly. Generally, bone grafts are placed when there is an absence of infection. A course of antibiotics will be given if there was an infection prior to treatment. The tooth is then removed and the bone graft is placed. The combination of antibiotics treatment and safe removal of the tooth and debris will make the swelling of the area much more likely not to swell. The short answer is a day or two of swelling or not at all. READ MORE

  • How much bone is needed for a dental implant?

The amount of bone depends on the size of the implant being placed and the area where the tooth is being replaced. Size of the implant varies depending on how much stress the tooth needs to handle. For example, a single tooth implant does not have to be as big or strong as implants that need to support a bridge or an implant supported denture. The amount of bone also depends on how much bone was present prior to treatment. Ideally, we like to keep the bone at the current bone level. Patients with severe periodontal disease are not candidates for bone grafts and implants due to the lack or original bone in the area. READ MORE

  • How long does your mouth stay numb after fillings?

Your mouth can stay numb from 4 to 8 hours after treatment depending on what kind of anesthetic was used. Another contributing factor would be how quickly you metabolize the anesthetic used. READ MORE
